Pebble beaches the colour of bone, water you can see your feet through, and a limestone wall almost two kilometres high standing directly behind the promenade — Makarska does not need to try very hard. It is the unofficial capital of the Makarska Riviera, and the sort of place where you swim before breakfast, eat grilled fish in a stone courtyard at nine, and end up on the Riva until well past midnight. Getting there from the airport should be the boring part of the day. Book your split airport transfers in advance and it will be.

At Zagvozd the road turns off and dives into the Sveti Ilija tunnel under the Biokovo massif. It is one of the best reveals on any Croatian road, and it lasts about four seconds before the descent to Baška Voda begins.
When the motorway is congested — peak Saturday changeover days in July and August, mostly — your driver may take the old Magistrala coastal road instead. It is shorter in kilometres and far slower in traffic, but it runs through the Omiš gorge where the Cetina river cuts down to the sea, then along the pine-backed beaches of Brela and Baška Voda. Either way the price you were quoted stays the price you pay.
Makarska itself sits in a near-perfect horseshoe bay with the mountain rising so abruptly behind it that from the Riva you look almost straight up at the cliffs. Your driver knows the town: the one-way system around the harbour, the beach hotels along Donja Luka, and the steep lanes climbing toward the Biokovo side. Some of those lanes are genuinely tight — for an experienced local driver that is routine, and where a vehicle simply cannot pass, we park as close as possible and carry the bags the rest of the way.

There is a bus. There is also a way to spend the first afternoon of your holiday standing at Split bus station with your suitcases, waiting for a connection, and then walking downhill to your hotel in 33-degree heat. For two people the private transfer is already close on price, and for a family it is not a contest. We will leave that choice to you.
There is no direct bus from the terminal, so the trip breaks into two legs. First you get into Split — either on the airport shuttle that meets most arrivals and runs to the main bus station near the harbour, or on the local number 37 city bus, which is cheaper, stops constantly, and drops you a walk short of the station. Then you buy a second ticket for a southbound coach.
Coaches down the coast are frequent in July and August and thin out sharply either side of the season, with long gaps in the evening. Buy the second leg online in advance if you can — in high summer the coastal services genuinely sell out, and the ticket window queue at Split bus station is not where you want to spend the first hour of a holiday. Luggage stored in the hold is usually charged separately, a euro or two per bag, in cash.
The catch is where you end up. The Makarska stop sits on the main road above the town, not on the seafront. Most hotels and apartments are below it, which means a downhill walk with your suitcases on arrival — and an uphill one on the way home. Fine with a backpack. Considerably less fine with two large cases, a pushchair, and a four-year-old.
All the major desks are in the terminal, and if your plan involves the Biokovo road, day trips down to Bačina Lakes, or the ferry ports for Brač and Hvar, a car earns its keep. Motorway tolls are paid at the barrier, and fuel is your own.
The honest downside is what happens after you arrive. Parking in central Makarska is limited and priced accordingly through the summer, many apartments in the old town come with no space at all, and the lanes on the Biokovo side above the town are narrow enough to make reversing a hire car an unwelcome skill to learn on day one. Plenty of visitors solve this by taking a transfer in, then renting locally for the two or three days they actually want a car.
There is a rank outside arrivals and you can walk straight to it. On a quiet April afternoon that works. On a Saturday in August, when four aircraft land inside forty minutes, the queue outsizes the cars and everyone in it wants to go somewhere on the Riviera.
