You have done Split. The Palace at eight in the morning before the tour groups, the fish market, one long evening on the Riva. Now the coast is calling and Makarska is where most people go next — a horseshoe bay of pale pebble beaches with a two-kilometre limestone wall standing directly behind the town. There are two ways south and your driver picks one on the morning, based on what the traffic is actually doing. Both take about the same time, which surprises most people — the motorway is twenty kilometres longer, and the last stretch into town is shared by both roads regardless.
The motorway route leaves the city eastwards, joins the A1, and runs inland through the stone-walled emptiness of the Dalmatinska Zagora. It is not the pretty option, but it is fast and predictable, and it ends dramatically: the road turns off at Zagvozd, dives into the tunnel under the Biokovo massif, and comes out with the whole Adriatic underneath you and the islands laid out on the horizon. Then down to the coast and along to Makarska.
The coastal Magistrala is the one people remember. It leaves Split past Bačvice beach and picks up the old road hugging the cliffs above the sea, then reaches Omiš — a town wedged between the water and the gorge where the Cetina river breaks through the mountain, with a medieval pirate fortress on the rock above it. The bypass now carries you over the river mouth on a high new bridge, and the view down the canyon from up there is worth the trip on its own. Passengers usually stop talking for a moment when the bridge opens up. After that the road runs the length of the Riviera with the sea to your right and the Biokovo cliffs climbing on your left.
Both roads deliver you into the same bay. Makarska sits directly beneath the mountain, close enough that from the promenade you look almost vertically up at the rock. Your driver knows the one-way system around the harbour and the steep lanes climbing the Biokovo side, and takes you to the exact address you booked.
If you would like the coastal road specifically — for the Omiš gorge and the bridge over the Cetina — say so when you book. We cannot promise it in every traffic situation, but the driver will take it when the road allows. A short stop above the canyon for photographs is easy to arrange at the same time.

The bus is genuinely cheap and if you are travelling alone with a rucksack it is a fine way to see the coast slowly. For two people the arithmetic tightens considerably, and for a family with cases the coach ceases to be a bargain the moment you are standing at a roadside stop above the town working out how far downhill your hotel is.
Buses leave from the main bus station beside the ferry port, so wherever you are staying in the city you first have to get yourself and your luggage there. Services down the coast are frequent through July and August and thin out sharply on either side of the season, with long gaps in the evening.
Buy online in advance if you can. In high summer the coastal services do sell out, and the ticket window queue at the station is slow. Luggage stored in the hold is charged separately, usually a euro or two per bag, in cash to the driver.
The catch is the arrival. The coach stops on the main road above the town, not on the seafront, and most accommodation sits below it. That means a walk downhill with your cases when you arrive and a climb back up when you leave. Perfectly manageable with a backpack, considerably less so with two large suitcases and a pushchair.
If your plan involves the Biokovo road, the ferry ports, or wandering further down the coast, a hire car pays for itself. Both roads south are straightforward to drive and the motorway tolls are paid at the barrier.
The awkward part starts on arrival. Parking in central Makarska is limited and priced accordingly all summer, a lot of old town apartments come with no space at all, and the lanes climbing the Biokovo side are narrow enough that reversing a hire car becomes a skill you learn under pressure. A common solution is to take a transfer down and rent locally for the two or three days you actually want wheels.
You can flag one down or find a rank, and for a short hop around the city that is exactly what you should do. For a run of this length it stops making sense.
The fare runs on a meter, so nobody can tell you the total before you set off, and a metered journey down the coast lands well above a fixed transfer price before any seasonal or luggage surcharge. Most rank cars also carry two people comfortably rather than four with holiday luggage. If you do take one, agree the total with the driver before the bags go in.
